Al Bastakiya

Bastakiya is officially named the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood and is one of the oldest areas in Dubai. In stark contrast to the modern face of Dubai, this district seems to have remained in a bygone era. Walking through the streets here, you can still feel the traditional emirate atmosphere as it was experienced during the 19th century.

A tour of Bastakiya

Bastakiya is made up of ancient houses with interior patios that have been reformed to show the splendor of past times.

Beautiful ancient windcatchers line the narrow streets, channeling the air towards the houses to ventilate them.

In grand buildings which were once the lavish homes of rich merchants, now stand shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes, making this a lovely area in which to get lost.

Cultural visits

Bastakiya has a cultural center (Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding), designed to bring tourists closer to the emirate world.

There are organized tours, normally given in English, which will take you to Bastakiya, Jumeirah Mosque, the markets, and even let you taste a traditional tea as you hear all about this fascinating district.
