Due to the large distances that have to be traveled, and the limited metro system, renting a car or taking a taxi will almost certainly be needed.

Necessary documentation for driving in Dubai

To rent a car and drive in Dubai, there are two possible options:

  • Have an international driver's license. In Spain, you can get it directly in the traffic offices. You must bring your ID card or passport, two passport-size photographs, and pay a small fee (about 10 (US$ 10.60)). Your license will be delivered to you there and then. You must always carry it with your original license as it it has no value on its own.
  • Obtain a temporary license upon arrival in Dubai. You will need to bring your passport, driving license, and two photographs.

Rent a car or take a taxi?

Due to the low fares of Dubai taxis and the high number of them, it is normally cheaper to use them than to rent a car.

Renting a car is recommended if you plan to visit nearby places such as Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, or Sharjah.

When renting a car in Dubai you have to take into account that the insurance only covers accidents occurred in the United Arab Emirates. If you plan to visit Oman or other nearby countries you should inform the rental company and will need to pay a large supplement.
