Al Fahidi
Going unnoticed between the shiny skyscrapers in Dubai, iconic buildings in the ancient neighbourhood of Al Fahidi preserve traditions and tell stories that will take you back in time.
Looking back in time
Previously known as Al Bastakiya, the Al Fahidi neighbourhood was founded in the 19th century with the construction of 60 simple houses on the shore of Dubai Creek.
During the 90s, part of the neighbourhood was demolished to leave space for more modern buildings, but at the last minute, they decided to preserve the city's roots and a key restoration project began to create an area filled with life.
Although the buildings we built using austere materials such as stone, plaster and wood, the majority of the buildings have been preserved relatively well and are examples of why we should keep the old city alive.
What to see in Al Fahidi
One of the main points of interest in Al Fahidi is the Dubai Museum, an ideal place to learn about the city's history, from its beginnings as a fishing village to its current modern urbanisation.
The Dubai Museum is interesting not just because of its content, but also because of its building, the Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building that has been preserved in the city. With a history dating back to 1787, it was built to protect the city from pirates, although it has since been used as an army base, prison and palace.
Another iconic place is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, an old residence that is one of the best examples of Arabic architecture from the end of the 19th century in Dubai.
Al Fahibi is a calm but lively area that is an enjoyable place to take a walk through and enjoy Dubai's culture and traditions. Walking around the labyrinth of streets you'll come across numerous handmade shops to by gifts, as well as restaurants and cafes where you can try some of the local cuisine.
